Why do non golf brands sponsor the PGA Tour? Uber shows the new logic.

David Mullins 12 Oct 2026 5 min read

Non golf brands sponsor the PGA Tour when the event creates a use case for their product. Uber signed on 24 August 2026 for exclusive rideshare and food delivery rights across the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions. The logic is usage, not awareness. Sponsors buy the moment a fan needs the product.

What Uber actually bought

According to the PGA Tour's announcement, Uber is now the Tour's official rideshare sponsor and Uber Eats its official on demand food delivery sponsor. It is a multiyear marketing partnership covering the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions, with exclusive rights in both categories. Planned activation covers digital and social platforms, tournament activations and fan engagement. Financial terms and length were not disclosed.

Two categories, one buyer. That is the first signal. The Tour carved its inventory into narrow, product led slots instead of one broad "official partner" badge. Narrow categories are easier to price, easier to defend and easier for a sponsor to measure.

The second signal is the product. Uber Golf, a seasonal offering launched earlier in 2026, lets riders reserve a ride for up to four players with their clubs, up to 90 days in advance. The product existed before the sponsorship. The deal gives it an audience and an occasion.

Sponsorship is moving from exposure to access and use

Golf has sold sponsorship like media for decades: logos, signage, broadcast mentions. The buyers have changed. Uber's global head of mobility described the logic in terms of "millions of fans attending PGA Tour events". Fans who have to get to and from a course, often in a place they do not live, and who then need food on site or back at the hotel. That is not awareness. That is a daily transaction waiting to happen.

The same pattern shows up elsewhere. SportBusiness reported that Bank of America signed as a Masters "Champion Partner", describing it as the bank's second statement sponsorship of the year after the FIFA World Cup. We covered the wider move in financial services brands in golf sponsorship, and the business to business version in Smurfit Westrock at the Ryder Cup. Different industries, same question: what does the audience do, and can we be part of it?

The best sponsorship deals sell a moment of need, not a space on a banner.

Why do non golf brands sponsor golf now?

Three reasons stand out from the deals. First, golf events concentrate a defined audience in one place for several days, with high dwell time. Second, the audience is commonly associated with higher spending categories such as travel, financial services and hospitality, though a sponsor should test that against its own data, not assume it. Third, a good property now offers category exclusivity, which protects the sponsor from a competitor appearing next to it.

There is also a structural point. Golf has fewer matchdays than most sports, so each event has to carry more commercial weight. Sponsors accept that when the rights are sharp and the activation is real. They walk when the rights are vague. We saw the other side of that in Farmers leaving the PGA Tour.

What this means if you own golf inventory

If you run a tournament, a club, a resort or a golf media property, stop selling "exposure". Break your inventory into categories that match what your audience actually does: how they arrive, eat, stay, play, practise, pay and travel home. Then ask which brands already have a product for each moment. That is a shorter and more credible prospect list than "brands that want to reach golfers".

Package access and data alongside the logo. Guaranteed category exclusivity. A plan for how the sponsor's product is used on site. A reporting line that shows usage, not impressions. Uber's announcement did not disclose the price, so do not benchmark against it. Benchmark against the structure.

What to do next

List ten transactions your audience makes around your event or venue. Identify the brand that owns each. Build one proposal per brand, centred on the transaction, with a clear way to measure it. If you want help structuring the packages, the category rights and the outreach, that is the work we do under commercial and partnerships.

Questions worth asking before your next planning cycle

Why do non golf brands sponsor the PGA Tour?

They sponsor when an event creates a use case for their product. Uber signed for rideshare and Uber Eats for food delivery because fans need transport and food around tournaments. Sponsors buy usage and access, not just awareness.

What did Uber sign with the PGA Tour?

On 24 August 2026 the PGA Tour announced Uber as official rideshare sponsor and Uber Eats as official on demand food delivery sponsor, in a multiyear partnership covering the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

How should golf properties sell sponsorship now?

Split inventory into product led categories that match audience behaviour, offer category exclusivity, and report on usage and outcomes rather than impressions. Build proposals around the transaction the sponsor wants to own.
