Golf brands get cited in AI search by publishing original research, expert analysis, first hand experience, unique data and a proprietary point of view. Google said in May 2026 that there is no separate AI search strategy. The brands that win are the ones with something worth quoting, not the ones chasing tricks.
What Google actually said
A lot of AI search advice is built on guesswork. Some of it is now contradicted by the source. According to a June and July 2026 roundup from Adapt Worldwide, Google's 15 May guidance said "there is no separate AI search strategy". It named five content types that earn citations in AI features: original research, expert analysis, first hand experience, unique data and proprietary perspective.
The same guidance said llms.txt files receive no special treatment from Google's crawlers. If you have paid someone to build you an AI visibility layer based on a text file, that is worth a conversation. A well structured file does no harm, but it is not the lever.
This matters for golf because the category is thin on citable material. Most brand sites carry product pages, a few press releases and a blog of seasonal tips. AI systems have plenty of that already. They need something they cannot get elsewhere.
The five content types, translated for golf
Original research: survey your own members, customers or players and publish the results with the method. A club that publishes what its members say about pace of play is a source. A club that posts about pace of play is not.
Expert analysis: a head pro, a fitter, a greenkeeper or a GM explaining a decision and the trade offs. Named, credentialed and specific. Unique data: your tee sheet trends, your fitting results, your repeat booking rates, shared in aggregate. Nobody else has them.
First hand experience: the account of someone who has done the thing. A resort manager on what changed when they bundled stay and play. A brand manager on what a creator programme actually returned. Proprietary perspective: a clear stance that is yours. Not "five tips for more members" but "why we stopped discounting and what happened".
AI search rewards the brand with something quotable, not the brand with the most pages.
How do golf brands get cited in AI search in practice?
Pick one question your buyer actually asks, such as how a club chooses a membership model or which driver suits a slower swing. Publish the best answer on the internet to it, with your data and a named author. Put the direct answer in the opening paragraph, in plain language, in under 60 words. That is the paragraph an AI system can lift without losing meaning.
Then support it. Use clear headings that match how people phrase questions. Add FAQ sections with real answers, not filler. Mark up the page with schema. Earn mentions from trade media and partners, because as we covered in the AI citation study, brand mentions appear to matter more than backlinks. None of this is exotic. It is good publishing, done consistently.
What the traffic data adds
Two numbers from the same roundup are worth knowing. A Previsible study of 166 sites over 19 months found ChatGPT accounted for 92.4% of standalone AI referral traffic, up from about 84% in December 2025. If you are choosing where to measure first, that is the place.
And 28.8% of ChatGPT referrals landed on a site's internal search results pages rather than the page that answered the query. For a golf retailer or club, that is a conversion issue hiding in plain sight. If a visitor arrives from an AI answer and lands on a weak site search page, you have paid for the click and lost the sale. Check what your internal search returns for your top ten product and membership queries.
Google has also begun reporting. Search Console now shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions by page, country and device, though click data is not yet included. Start logging it now, so you have a baseline when the click data arrives. We went deeper on the click problem in our piece on AI Mode and zero click search.
What to do this month
Audit your ten most important pages against the five content types. For each, ask what it contains that a competitor could not copy. If the answer is nothing, rewrite it around data or experience you own. Then check your site search, set up the Search Console AI reporting, and test your brand in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google for the questions that drive revenue. If you want this built into your marketing system rather than run as a side project, our performance and AI search work covers the content, the tracking and the conversion path.
Questions worth asking before your next planning cycle
How do golf brands get cited in AI search?
Publish content AI systems cannot get elsewhere: original research, expert analysis, first hand experience, unique data and a proprietary point of view. Lead each page with a direct answer under 60 words and a named author.
Does llms.txt help golf brands rank in Google AI features?
Google has said llms.txt files receive no special treatment from its crawlers. A file does no harm, but it is not a substitute for original, citable content.
